VEX IQ Robotics
Step into the exciting world of VEX IQ Robotics in this beginner-friendly class designed for students in grades 3rd–5th. Students will learn how to design, build, and program a robot through coursework designed by Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy. Guided by experienced instructors, participants will develop robotics skills through hands-on building, coding, and strategy, in a fun and supportive environment.
Session 1: Robot movement
Students will build their VEX IQ robot and learn how to code their robot to move forward, turn, and control their claw. Students will learn about the robot's display and send a message through the display.
Project: Students will program their robot to navigate around the moon's craters. Students will learn how to code their robot to travel measured distances and move around obstacles.
Session 2: Digital Sensors
Students will learn how to use the Touch LED and Bumper Sensors in VEX IQ. Students will learn how program their robot to respond to their environment using wait until controls.
Project: Students will program their robots to touch all four walls of a room using the digital sensors. When the robot senses a wall, the robot should display a color and travel to the next wall.
Session 3: Analog Sensors
Students will learn how to use the Distance and Optical Sensors in VEX IQ. Students will how control their robot to pick up VEX Cubes when it detects certain colors.
Project: Students will program their robot to travel through a disaster site while avoiding walls and danger zones.
Session 4: Loops and Decision Making
Students will learn how to code their robot to make repeated actions and decisions by using loops and "If, else" statements.
Project: Students will program their robot to clear and sort debris out of the roadway using decisions making and the Optical Sensor.
