Parents: In 1 day, each child explores the exciting world of robot sumo through hands-on building, driving, and friendly competition. Scaffolded tasks introduce robot safety, kit parts, basic assembly, controller pairing, movement drills, and beginner match strategy. No experience is required, and each session includes opportunities for older or more experienced students in grades 4–6 to take on added challenges.
Kids: Build it, drive it, battle it! You’ll work with a team to build a sumo robot, practice driving skills, and test your bot in the ring. By the end of the day, you’ll compete in mini matches, improve your design, and learn what makes a strong SumoBot.
Campers work in small teams of up to 3 students to build and test a SumoBot. Throughout the day, teams assemble a reliable base, learn the controls, practice movement and edge-awareness, and compete in beginner-friendly scrimmages. Helpers are welcome for encouragement, but campers take the lead in building, driving, and improving their own bot.
4 ninety-minute sessions per day (S1–S4)
Small-team builds with guided instruction, practice drills, and match play
Differentiation built into each session
Outcomes: Learn SumoBot safety and rules, build a basic robot chassis, pair and use controls, practice driving drills, and compete in beginner-friendly matches.
S1 Kickoff + Safety
Activities: Learn what SumoBots are, explore ring rules, review safety expectations, and get to know the robot kit and tools. Teams inventory parts and prepare to build.
Words: chassis, motor, controller, ring, safety, traction.
Level Up (Grades 4–6): Discuss what makes a robot stable and competitive, and begin thinking about how design choices affect pushing power and control.
S2 Fast Build Base
Activities: Follow guided steps to assemble a reliable robot base. Test motors, connections, and basic movement to make sure the bot is ready to drive.
Level Up (Grades 4–6): Adjust part placement for better balance and begin experimenting with simple design improvements like weight placement or front attachments.
S3 Controls + Driving Drills
Activities: Pair the controller and practice forward, reverse, turning, stopping, and staying away from the edge of the ring. Teams rotate driving roles and build confidence through short drills.
Level Up (Grades 4–6): Practice more precise driving, edge-save recovery, and short strategy drills such as angle approaches or controlled pushes.
S4 Mini Matches + Improvements
Activities: Put bots into the ring for beginner-friendly scrimmages. Teams compete in short matches, make quick fixes, and reflect on what helped their robot perform better. End with a fun showcase or mini bracket.
Reflection: What made your bot stronger—driving, design, or teamwork?
Level Up (Grades 4–6): Try quick tuning between matches, test a simple wedge or front attachment, and develop a match plan before each round.
