Smart Energy City

Smart Energy City: LEGO Spike Robotics Camp

Parents: A hands‑on, engineering‑focused camp where young makers investigate how energy is generated, stored, moved, and managed in a city. Each day combines guided builds with LEGO Spike robotics, beginner‑friendly coding in the Spike app, and structured testing. No prior experience required.

Kids: Become energy engineers! Build windmills, solar trackers, charge stations, and delivery robots. Code your LEGO Spike creations to sense, move, and react. Test, fix, and try again—make the lights come on!

What This Connects To

  • Theme: Energy sources, transmission, storage, and innovative use.
  • Core skills: Problem solving, engineering design, mechanisms, coding logic, debugging, cause/effect, pattern recognition, early data collection, and teamwork.

Day-by-Day Plan

Day 1: Power On — Where Energy Comes From

Focus: Energy sources, simple mechanisms, Spike motors/sensors basics.

  1. S1 Launch: Brainstorm energy sources (sun, wind, water, batteries).
  2. S2 Build (LEGO Spike): Prototype a solar tilt rig, wind turbine, or water wheel.
  3. S3 Code and Test: Use Spike blocks to spin/tilt; test angles and speed.
  4. S4 Share: Name your station; note one improvement.

Level Up: Add a start/stop button; reduce friction; place station on the city map with a power estimate.

Day 2: Move the Power — Lines, Pipes, and Paths

Focus: Energy transport, networks, basic status indicators.

  1. S1 Mini‑lesson: How power travels; redundancy.
  2. S2 Build: Lay “power lines” and add poles/conduits.
  3. S3 Code & Test: Use a Spike hub as a “substation” (LED status); move a token; fix bottlenecks.
  4. S4 Map Update: Add arrows and a legend.

Level Up: Create two routes; simulate an outage; time a token run.

Day 3: Store It Up — Batteries and Smart Use

Focus: Storage, demand management, timers/states, simple data.

  1. S1 Problem: “Cloudy day.” Brainstorm storage and priority loads.
  2. S2 Build (Spike): Battery/charging station with color sensor or button.
  3. S3 Code & Practice: Program day/night cycle; LEDs/sounds for state.
  4. S4 Data Talk: Track charge in vs. power out.

Level Up: Light‑matrix meter; auto‑off lights; emergency priority rule.

Day 4: SuperPowered Helpers — Vehicles and Delivery Robots

Focus: Drivetrains, sensors, navigation, debugging.

  1. S1 Challenge: Build a service vehicle or delivery robot with Spike motors.
  2. S2 Track: Roads with slopes/bridges; test traction.
  3. S3 Missions: Program deliveries using distance/time blocks; color sensor stops.
  4. S4 Debug: Strengthen axles; refine code for straighter paths.

Level Up: Cargo hook/bed and load/unload sequence; sensor‑based alignment; route time comparison.

Day 5: City Integration — Resilient and Bright

Focus: System integration, scenario testing, iteration.

  1. S1 Integrations: Connect sources, storage, roads; tidy wiring.
  2. S2 Scenarios: Windy day, cloudy day, line down; adjust code/mechanisms.
  3. S3 Checks: Document a failure point and fix.
  4. S4 Demo Runs: Show start → move → store → deliver.

Level Up: Add a community load (school/park lights); emergency‑stop behavior; short video tour.
