LEGO Robotics Challenge: Design, Code, and Conquer the MASTERPIECE Mission Field

MASTERPIECE Robot Game — FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Camp

Overview

In this 5‑day camp, kids work on the official FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge “MASTERPIECE” Robot Game. FLL is a global program where students design and program a small LEGO robot to complete specific tasks on a themed game table. Campers will build a dependable LEGO robot, create easy‑to‑swap attachments, and write sensor‑based programs so the robot can complete missions and score points—just like in real FLL competitions.

Advanced option: Experienced or returning campers can build more complex robots and code with Pybricks Blocks or Python to create longer, higher‑scoring runs.

Learning Goals

  • Robot design: sturdy chassis, modular attachments, consistent alignment
  • Programming: gyro‑straight driving, precise turns, line alignment/follow, reusable custom blocks (MyBlocks)
  • Strategy: mission selection, point analysis, multi‑mission runs, efficient resets
  • Documentation: run cards, setup checklists, fast tuning workflow

Daily Plan

Day 1 — Kickoff and Foundations

  • Season intro and field tour
  • Build a stable robot base; add gyro and color sensor
  • Program straight drive, accurate 90° turns, gentle acceleration
  • Deliverable: consistent launch and docking in base

Day 2 — Strategy and First Missions

  • Mission map: quick wins vs. stretch goals
  • Design quick‑swap attachments with guides for repeatable setup
  • Create MyBlocks for drive‑to, align‑on‑line, and deploy
  • Deliverable: one reliable scoring mission run

Day 3 — Consistency and Chained Runs

  • Combine gyro + line sensing; wall‑square and bump‑align
  • Segment paths with waypoints to reduce drift
  • Chain two missions in one run with a safe return to base
  • Reliability checks: battery level, wheel scrub, attachment repeatability

Day 4 — Optimize and Document

  • Tune speed vs. accuracy; add guards for failure modes
  • Refine attachments for guidance and low friction
  • Parameterize distances; add comments and on‑brick prompts
  • Prepare run cards, setup jigs, and a field reset workflow

Day 5 — Dress Rehearsal and Final Tuning

  • Finalize two dependable mission runs with timing
  • Practice launches, attachment swaps, and base setup
  • Friendly scrimmage with feedback and iteration

What Participants Take Away

  • A reliable robot base and at least one consistent scoring routine
  • Reusable navigation and mission code (MyBlocks or Python)
  • Refined attachments and a repeatable launch/setup process
