Skybuilders: Floating-Island Quest Camp

Skybuilders: Create Your Own Floating‑Island Quest

Parents: In 5 days, each child designs a simple, playable “floating‑island quest” game. Scaffolded tasks teach sequencing, loops, variables, events, and basic conditionals. Each session offers “Try This First” and “Level Up” paths to support a wide range of experience levels.

Kids: Build your Skyworld! Your Agent helps you craft bridges, lift platforms, light beacons, and treasure shrines across floating islands. By Day 5, you’ll start the quest, collect keys, unlock the portal, and invite friends to play!

Project Model

Every student creates a personal “Sky Quest” in a private plot. Daily features stack to form a complete adventure—spawn island, bridge builders, beacon checkpoints, keys, gates, and a start/reset flow. Helpers are welcome for ideas, but each world and code is your own.

Daily Structure

  • 4 one‑hour sessions per day (S1–S4)
  • Individual worlds, individual code; optional 5‑minute neighbor check‑ins for ideas
  • Differentiation: “Try This First” + “Level Up” tasks each session

Day 1: Welcome to the Sky — Events, Sequencing, Loops

Outcomes: Open Code Builder, use on‑chat events, sequence steps, repeat actions, move/place with the Agent.

  1. S1 Tour + Takeoff Activities: Learn controls; open Code Builder (Blocks); run “on start.” Mini‑task: Agent forward 3, turn right, place a glowstone. Words: event, sequence, loop, Agent.
  2. S2 Island Pads with Loops Activities: Use a repeat loop to build a 7×7 floating pad. Challenge: Checkerboard rim. Level Up: Nested loop for a 9×9 with a hollow core.
  3. S3 Make a Command Activities: Create buildBridge(length, blockType) and connect two pads. Debug with chat prints.
  4. S4 Mini‑Showcase Activities: 1‑minute solo demo of “/buildBridge.” Reflect: What did loops save you?

Level Up (advanced): Chat input for island size; try Python for the move/place routine.

Day 2: Maps and Gates — Variables, If/Else

Outcomes: Read XYZ, use variables, make choices with if/else.

  1. S1 Coordinate Hunt Activities: Teleport to markers; place a flag at your player position; torch 5 blocks north.
  2. S2 Adjustable Bridges Activities: Variable n sets bridge length/rail height. Test n=5,7,11. Challenge: Choose block via chat.
  3. S3 Locked Gate Activities: If “key” is collected, open a gate; else show a hint lamp. Build a simple archway gate between islands.
  4. S4 Debug + Share Activities: Fix wrong axis/off‑by‑one/facing bugs; 30‑second solo demo.

Level Up (advanced): Diagonal rope bridges with simple vectors; validate n (min/max).

Day 3: Style and Surprises — Arrays and Random

Outcomes: Create patterns with lists; add variety with random.

  1. S1 Beacon Styles Activities: List of blocks [lantern, lantern, blue glass, blue glass]; lay a patterned beacon ring.
  2. S2 Treasure Shrines Activities: Randomly place 3 shrines across small islets. Extension: Weighted random for a rare “gold” chest.
  3. S3 Event Magic Activities: On chat “light,” place lanterns near the player; on item used, Agent comes to you.
  4. S4 Clean Code + Test Activities: Self‑test checklist; invite one neighbor to try “/buildIsland” for 2 minutes.

Level Up (advanced): Seeded randomness; save/load pattern lists.

Day 4: Keys and Checkpoints — Core Quest Mechanics

Outcomes: Add collectible keys, beacon checkpoints, and a start/reset flow—individually.

  1. S1 Checkpoint Beacons Activities: Agent places a plate + lamp; “beacon lights up” when crossed.
  2. S2 Key Counter Activities: Track keysFound with a variable; show status in chat or on signs.
  3. S3 Build the Route Activities: Combine islands and bridges into a multi‑stop path; place 2–3 beacons and 2 keys.
  4. S4 Playtest Activities: Two solo runs; adjust spacing/speeds using variables.

Level Up (advanced): Penalty if a beacon is skipped; simple compass hint toward the next key.

Day 5: Finish and Share — Sky Quest Showcase

Outcomes: Each student completes a unique floating‑island quest with start/reset commands, keys, beacons, and a short presentation.

  1. S1 Plan Final Touches Activities: Pick personal features; checklist review (start, reset, 2+ beacons, 2 keys, gate unlock).
  2. S2 Build + Code Activities: Add “/startQuest” and “/resetQuest”; tidy names/comments.
  3. S3 Practice + Polish Activities: Test for gaps; simplify loops; add a help chat command.
  4. S4 Showcase! Activities: 1–2 minute solo demo; unlock the gate; celebrate with badges (Loop Legend, Quest Maker, Beacon Master).

Level Up (advanced): Optional Python refactor of key logic; “difficulty” variable that widens gaps slightly.
