City Shaper: FLL Robot Game Camp

FIRST LEGO League Camp: CITY SHAPER Robot Game

Overview: In this 5‑day camp, participants focus on the FIRST LEGO League Challenge CITY SHAPER Robot Game. Build a reliable LEGO robot, design modular attachments, and program sensor‑driven routines to complete CITY SHAPER missions on the field (bridges, traffic, crane, elevator, and more).

Note: Experienced or repeat campers can build more advanced drivetrains, code with Pybricks blocks or Python, and develop longer, higher‑scoring multi‑mission runs.

Learning Goals

  • Robot design: rigid chassis, square alignment, swappable front/top attachments
  • Programming: gyro‑straight driving, precise turns, line‑follow/alignment, reusable MyBlocks
  • Strategy: mission mapping, point/effort tradeoffs, two‑plus mission chains, efficient base resets
  • Documentation: run cards, setup checklists, calibration and tuning logs

Daily Plan

Day 1 — Kickoff and Foundations

  • Season intro and field tour: CITY SHAPER models, scoring, constraints, and safe field handling
  • Build a stable robot base; mount and calibrate gyro and color sensors
  • Program straight drive, accurate 90°/180° turns, gentle acceleration and braking
  • Deliverable: consistent launch and square docking in home/base

Day 2 — Strategy and First CITY SHAPER Missions

  • Create a mission map: quick wins (e.g., traffic jam, crane) vs. stretch goals (e.g., elevator, steel construction)
  • Design quick‑swap attachments with guides for repeatable setup
  • Create MyBlocks for drive‑to, align‑on‑line, dock‑and‑deploy actions
  • Deliverable: one reliable, scoring CITY SHAPER mission run

Day 3 — Consistency and Chained Runs

  • Combine gyro + line sensing; wall‑square and gentle bump‑align near models
  • Use waypoint segments to reduce drift over distance and around obstacles
  • Chain two missions in one run with a safe return to base
  • Reliability checks: battery level, wheel scrub, attachment repeatability, table variance

Day 4 — Optimize and Document

  • Tune speed vs. accuracy; add guards for failure modes (missed line, slip, mis‑dock)
  • Refine attachments for guidance, clearance around buildings, and low friction
  • Parameterize distances/angles; add comments and on‑brick prompts
  • Prepare run cards, setup jigs, and a field reset workflow

Day 5 — Dress Rehearsal and Final Tuning

  • Finalize two dependable CITY SHAPER mission runs with timing
  • Practice launches, attachment swaps, and base setup under light time pressure
  • Friendly scrimmage with feedback and iteration
