Metric Mastery Camp: Measure, Estimate, and Solve

Parents: A hands-on STEM camp where students build confidence with measurement, estimation, and real-world math through fun, guided activities. Campers in grades 1–3 practice comparing sizes, using simple measuring tools, and making smart estimates with everyday objects. Inspired by the Science Olympiad Metric Mastery event, this camp introduces core ideas like length, mass, volume, time, temperature, and basic unit conversions in an age-appropriate, engaging way. Level Up options are included for older or more advanced campers in grades 4–6.

Kids: Become a measurement master! Guess, test, compare, and measure all kinds of objects using rulers, scales, timers, and more. You’ll practice making good estimates, using real tools, and solving cool measurement challenges like a scientist.

Project Model

Campers rotate through hands-on measurement and estimation challenges using classroom tools and everyday objects. Students learn how to estimate first, then measure carefully, record answers with the correct units, and compare results. Activities are designed for grades 1–3, with optional Level Up extensions that introduce more advanced calculations and conversions for grades 4–6.

4 ninety-minute sessions per day (S1–S4)

Estimate, Measure, and Master the Metric System

Outcomes: Learn common metric units, practice estimating and measuring, and use tools carefully to solve real-world measurement challenges.

S1 Meet the Metric System
Activities: Campers are introduced to metric units for length, mass, volume, time, and temperature. Students compare objects, talk about which units make sense, and begin practicing how to make reasonable estimates.

Try This First: Estimate and compare the length, height, or mass of familiar objects.
Level Up: Match measurements to the best unit and explain why that unit fits best.

S2 Measure It for Real
Activities: Use real tools such as rulers, balances, timers, and measuring containers to check estimates and record careful measurements. Campers practice reading tools correctly and labeling answers with units.
Try This First: Measure simple classroom objects with one tool at a time.
Level Up: Use more than one tool or record measurements more precisely.

S3 Estimate, Then Calculate
Activities: Campers try challenge stations where they first estimate and then measure objects such as boxes, balls, containers, or classroom items. Students may also find perimeter, area, volume, or density in beginner-friendly ways.
Try This First: Estimate and measure length, mass, or volume.
Level Up: Calculate area, volume, density, or do simple metric conversions.

S4 Metric Challenge and Share
Activities: Campers rotate through final mini challenge stations, compare results, and talk about which estimating and measuring strategies worked best. Students reflect on how close their estimates were and what helped them improve.
Reflection: Which estimate was closest? What tool helped you the most today?
Level Up: Solve a mixed challenge with estimation, measurement, and conversion all in one task.
