Explore the exciting world of game design using the Unity game engine to create interactive 2D and 3D games. Using the CodeHS platform, students will learn how games are planned, built, tested, and improved while exploring the creativity and logic behind interactive digital experiences.
This class helps students gain programming skills in C# and Unity's scripting system. Through guided lessons, coding activities, and design challenges, students will explore how games use movement, scoring, levels, timing, user input, and visual feedback to create fun and interactive experiences.
Students will not only learn how to build games, but also how to think like designers. They will examine what makes a game fun, balanced, and user-friendly while practicing problem-solving, creativity, and computational thinking. Along the way, they will use CodeHS tools to write code, test ideas, debug problems, and create their own playable projects.
Students will be allowed to work on lessons at home.
Unit 1: Game Design
Students will learn the structure of different types of games and basic ways to analyze and design games through the MDA framework. Students will learn how to write a Game Design Document. They will learn how make sure that their games are accessible using the APX Model.
Unit 2: Unity Game Engine
Students will be introduced to the Unity Game Engine and what types of games can be created through it. Students will learn how to use Unity's interface and how to create and manipulate GameObjects.
Unit 3: Unity Scripting Basics
Students will use Unity scripting API with C# scripts. Students will learn how to create functions, declare variables, and define classes. They will get a chance to develop player controls and inputs.
Unit 4: Develop 2D Games
Students will have a chance to create their first 2D game in Unity! Students will create sprites and animations to make their characters come to life. Students will then get a chance to program an NPC and add menus and displays.
Unit 5: Develop 3D Games
Students will build off of their 2D game development skills to create 3D games using lighting effects, sounds, and camera angle movements. Students will learn about game physics and learn how to trigger events.
Unit 6: Design Your own Game
Unit 7: Virtual Reality Environments
Unit 8: Develop Your own Game
Students will get a chance to develop their own game. They will first prototype and test their games using grayboxing techniques. Then they will get a chance to finalize their games.
