Codebusters: Crack the Code

Parents: A beginner-friendly, puzzle-based camp that introduces students to the exciting world of cryptography in just one day. Campers learn how secret messages work, practice solving a variety of age-appropriate ciphers, and build confidence through logic, pattern recognition, and teamwork. Throughout the day, students decode messages, test strategies, and explore how math, language, and problem-solving come together in a fun and engaging way.

Kids: Become a real codebreaker! Solve secret messages, discover hidden patterns, and learn how to crack different kinds of ciphers. You’ll use logic, clues, and clever thinking to unlock puzzles and see if you can outsmart the code.

Project Model

Each camper works through a series of Codebusters-style cipher challenges over the course of the day. Students learn how to recognize cipher types, use solving strategies, and decode messages using logic, letter patterns, and simple math. Campers may try substitution ciphers, symbol-based codes, and beginner cryptography puzzles while building speed and confidence.

Daily Structure

4 ninety-minute sessions per day (S1–S4)
Individual and partner-based puzzle solving with guided instruction and group discussion
Differentiation built into each session with Try This First and Level Up options
Tools: Pencil, calculator, cipher charts, printed puzzle guides

Learn to Think Like a Codebreaker

Outcomes: Learn what ciphers are, identify common code types, use pattern-based solving strategies, and complete a variety of beginner-friendly Codebusters challenges.

S1 Welcome to Cryptography
Activities: Learn what cryptography is, how secret messages are encoded and decoded, and how Codebusters competitions work. Campers are introduced to common vocabulary and practice spotting patterns in simple coded messages.
Words: plaintext, ciphertext, key, encode, decrypt, cipher, cryptanalysis.
Try This First: Decode a simple message by matching letters and spotting repeated patterns.
Level Up: Compare multiple cipher styles and explain how you knew which strategy to use.

S2 Crack Your First Ciphers
Activities: Explore beginner-friendly ciphers such as Aristocrat, Atbash, Caesar, or Baconian. Campers practice using frequency clues, letter patterns, and known word structures to decode short messages.
Try This First: Solve a short substitution or shift cipher with guided hints.
Level Up: Try a second cipher type with fewer hints or a longer message.

S3 Strategy, Logic, and Challenge Rounds
Activities: Learn how to approach harder puzzles by testing ideas, checking letter frequency, and looking for common endings, short words, and repeated groups. Campers work through challenge rounds that build accuracy and confidence.
Try This First: Use a frequency chart or code key to solve a guided puzzle.
Level Up: Tackle a multi-step cipher or a timed mini challenge.

S4 Solve, Share, and Celebrate
Activities: Campers complete final puzzles, compare strategies, and reflect on what helped them solve different codes. Students share favorite ciphers, explain their thinking, and celebrate their progress as codebreakers.
Reflection: What clues helped you solve a message? Which cipher was your favorite and why?
Level Up: Create your own coded message for another camper to solve.
